DUBLIN, NH—Every year since 1973, The Walden School has offered free public concerts that have drawn enthusiastic audiences of music lovers to its New England venues. The popular Concert Series returns for 2013 with a five-week season across the Monadnock Region of NH. All concerts are free and open to the public.
The 2013 season offers superb musicians representing diverse genres and musical styles, all presenting ambitious programs with music ranging from the New Orleans jazz, contemporary improvised and electronic music, music of George Crumb, Henry Cowell, Samuel Barber and John Cage, world premieres by Walden faculty members, and contemporary works by George Lewis, David Ludwig, and Caroline Mallonée, among many others.
Audience members can also be the first on the block to hear the composers of tomorrow with performances of world premieres written by participants in The Walden School’s Young Musicians Program, a summer camp and festival like no other that American composer Joan Tower has called “one of America’s greatest hidden treasures.”
“The Walden School is excited to offer exciting musical events for our community in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire,” explains Seth Brenzel, executive director of The Walden School. “This year’s series focuses on the music of living composers and songwriters, and on July 19, we offer a special concert to celebrate 15 years of Walden’s unique electronic music program with a concert of entirely improvised sound. The performers on Walden’s concert series are of the highest caliber, and all of our presentations promise to open audience members’ ears in delightful and inspiring ways.”
The Chicago-based Dal Niente Ensemble will be in residence in New Hampshire from July 8-12. During their residency, the ensemble will present two days of open rehearsals and a concert of newly composed world premieres on July 12.

Walden’s “house band” of exceptional performers present an electric concert of contemporary music to kick off Festival Week. One of the most popular concerts on our annual summer series, this is a culminating performance by the entire Young Musicians Program community featuring a variety of choral ensembles. Works to be featured include music by Copland, Barber, Mallonée, Tallis, Tavener, Barber, among others.
The Walden School, founded in 1972, is an acclaimed summer music school and festival offering programs that emphasize creative application, specifically through the study of musicianship, improvisation, and composition. In residence on the beautiful campuses of the Dublin School in Dublin, New Hampshire (since 1983), and Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, the School provides an inspiring retreat-like environment ideal for creative music making. The School’s programs include the Young Musicians Program for musicians ages 9 to 18, the Teacher Training Institute for music educators, and the Creative Musicians Retreat for adult musicians. The School’s Concert Series showcases free public performances by renowned artists and ensembles that work closely with program participants. The Walden School was awarded a Chamber Music America/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award in 2012, a 2011 New Music Educator Award from the American Music Center (now New Music USA) and was a finalist for a 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. The Walden School is the successor organization to the Junior Conservatory Camp.
